The Working of the Divine Power

The Working of the Divine Power

It is a very good sign if you feel a silence in the head. Let it settle down and you will be free from the habitual round of thoughts. In that silence, higher knowledge may come. Sri Aurobindo wrote all his books in the silence of the mind. In a Buddhist monastery, the silent mind is the primary object of the spiritual discipline. One should remain as peaceful as possible. This silence in the mind will have a beneficial effect on the body.
Man, the humanity, is going through perhaps the last formidable crisis in its evolution. The Divine Power is relentlessly working for peace, unity and harmony everywhere, on all levels of society. All ego driven motives will lead to discord, suffering and ruin. The Divine Power is generating new forces for greater collaboration, cooperation and collective enterprise. It will awaken everywhere among an elite, a sense of unity, a basic need to share and work together for the good of the race. As the need for a global peace and harmony and the sharing of the wealth of the world will be felt as urgent and imperative in order to avoid a general catastrophe, in the minds of the leaders and thinkers concerned with the destiny of our race, new happy solutions will be found for all the unhappy problems of our existence. But as long as man lives in his ego, that is to say, in the mental consciousness which cannot feel the essential unity of all creation in the Divine, he is incapable of achieving real unity even in conception, much less in action. only a spiritual being, a man having a divine consciousness, can solve the fundamental problems of human life. That is why development of the true spiritual consciousness in humanity is the main preoccupation of the Divine Power, the Divine Mother Nature. The Mother and Sri Aurobindo came on Earth to prepare the new race, the divine race. As more and more souls will be touched by the transforming Divine Force, more and more peace and harmony will manifest on Earth and gradually the strife, struggle, violence, suffering, torture and agony will be forgotten, replaced by a constantly growing luminous consciousness of unity, harmony, beauty and joy. A farmer talking of his old dog which could hardly move said, "Luckily, he does not feel his misery." Man luckily feels his miserable condition. So surely he will recognise the true solution one day. He has experimented with a thousand remedies and always turns finally to the spiritual solution, and no sincere seeker has ever been deceived. But now, any individual deliverance is not sufficient.
The whole earth is aspiring for a new light, new life, Life Divine. We could all take part in this great adventure by consecrating our mind, life, body and soul in the service of the Divine, by surrendering our ego to the Divine, by allowing the Divine Mother to shape us according to Her vision. One can say joyfully, the Earth is responding to the healing touch of the Mother Divine. The seeds sown by the Mother are sprouting and soon they will be saplings. The Earth has crossed the fateful frontier and entered the age of light and truth. Blessed be Thy name, Mother Divine.

Perfect Surrender and Sincerity

Perfect Surrender and Sincerity

The yoga of Sri Aurobindo is based on the principle of perfect surrender to the Divine, His Power, the Mother, the Supreme Consciousness. One must be ready to offer to the Divine, one's present, past and future, everything one is and has, all one possesses or will ever possess, without any personal claim or demand for a reward except the constant growth of consciousness Then only the Supreme Power will intervene and undertake the yoga of transformation. This necessity of total surrender to the Divine must be very deeply felt and understood for really nothing much happens in the way of spiritual development unless the being accepts the principle of surrender. It is a very serious decision in the life of an aspiring soul for by accepting the principle of surrender one enters into the line of Divine evolution. Very few souls can do the total surrender right from the beginning. One has to start somewhere and gradually extend the principle of surrender as much as one can to the whole being. By what Light shall we be guided in the beginning? By the very fact that one wants to do the yoga or is attracted to it means a sufficiently evolved psychic consciousness in the being. With sincerity as the touchstone we are able to measure the quantity of gold in the alloy. Without sincerity one cannot move a single step towards the Divine. Sincerity can easily feel the psychic light and influence and recognise unmistakably all that is false, deformed, selfish, obscure and ignorant, all that is twisted and perverted, all that is cunning and deceitful in our nature. We must take the side of the psychic being, the Divine in us at all times and consistently reject all that is not consistent with the sublime ideal of the Divine life. If there is a refusal to follow the indications coming from the psychic light then not only one doesn't progress anymore in the spiritual consciousness but falls in the grips of dangerously powerful tenebrous forces and leads a life of delusion, if far worse calamities do not ruin his life. One should never play with the Divine. The path is extremely difficult, requires great courage, self abnegation and a crystal clear sincerity. On the other hand, if one has the sincerity and the will to surrender to the Mother Divine then even if one has a mountain of difficulties, he need not fear or despair for the Mother Divine will carry the sincere soul to the utmost heights of spiritual accomplishments. The Mother is simple, always accessible and above all, She is straight. There are parts in our being which are obscure, even treacherous to the Divine, seemingly incorrigible. If we are sincere to the Mother, She will not turn away from us but change all obscurity, falsehood into Light and Truth, free us from the servitude of mortality into the eternal joy and freedom of the immortal spirit. Let us not hold on to our tiny unhappy precarious domain but surrender it to the Mother Divine for She will then admit us into the boundless shining Kingdom of God forever blissful.

Let us sacrifice our humanity

Let us sacrifice our humanity

Up till now, that is before the advent of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, only the highest power of the spiritual mind was operative in the earth consciousness. Sri Aurobindo calls it the Overmind. It is the highest spiritual mind. It had only a great liberating influence on the consciousness. That is why up till now spirituality was mainly an inner experience powerless against the inherent human ignorance and animal instincts, diseases, unhappiness, death and decomposition. There was an inhibition, a control over the movements of ignorance but no fundamental transformation. That is why the world has remained practically unchanged in character since the appearance of man on earth. Man is a mental being and as long as he remains so, he cannot get away from the human limitations. Sri Aurobindo says that there is a supreme consciousness of Truth beyond the highest reaches of mind; only its direct intervention can transform man into a divine being with a divine consciousness in the inner as well as the outer life. Man is the result of the descent of the mind power in the apes. So too the descent of the Truth Consciousness in the human beings will create the divine race, the next step in the evolution. In the beginning a minority will respond to the pressure of the incoming New Light. These beings will feel a natural urge to go beyond their own humanity and rise into a more luminous state of being. To them nothing human however sublime would mean much. It is not that they have a contempt for humanity or that they want to be superhuman in a megalomaniac way. Impelled by a profound aspiration to change our life of mortality, ignorance and suffering, they will respond to the call of the World Mother and her transmuting Force. Unless they are absolutely convinced of their high spiritual destiny, unless they are willing to give up their humanity, willing to do anything and everything in an attitude of total surrender to the Divine, their claim to a higher life is vain and pretentious, full of extreme dangers. Yet once one is convinced of one's irrevocable destiny, then no difficulties however great can stand in the way. Man's God, his experience of God in mind is incapable of transforming this world. We must discover the new Godhead of the supramental consciousness and put ourselves entirely exclusively under his transforming power. Then the miracle will work. But the difficulties on the way are enormous and they cannot be minimised. Our nature clings to our humanity and the human ways. Each touch of the divine Liberator is an excrutiating torment. But once one has tasted the delight of the divine consciousness, one cannot remain any longer satisfied even with the greatest treasures of human life. Our measure of readiness for a divine life can be judged easily by observing our attachment to the human life and its gilted ideals. As long as we remain human and prize our humanity we will remain bogged in the mire of ignorance, obscurity and suffering. This is the question the evolutionary Power puts to every human being. Do you want to remain human or do you want to rise to a luminous transforming consciousness? As long as we justify our human ignorant movements we are ourselves putting immense obstacles in the way. The Divine can do all, if we approach Him with simple, honest sincerity. As we call Him, He will shape and arrange the events and circumstances of our life with love and wisdom, for our spiritual progress. We must give up the habit of telling Him what to do for us. This habit is so ingrained in us that we take this as a sign of surrender. The Mother and Sri Aurobindo have brought down the eternal divine consciousness in the earth atmosphere and the divine race will be born on earth, the same as man was born when the mind descended on earth. It is an extraordinary period of transition. Whatever is false is bound to disappear though time is required on the evolutionary scale.

Let us sacrifice our humanity in the transforming Fire of divine consciousness. A humble true beginning is now possible. Let us call Her into our life.

White Dreams, Blue Dreams

White dreams, blue dreams, my golden dreams...
I see a magic city rise amidst barren cliffs,
Cathedrals replace the hills, children blossom in fields,
Perennial rivers flow through the hungry desert lips,
Little springs push aside giant boulders of granite.
I see priceless diamonds mingled with broken glass and odd bits,
In possession of amateur thieves and treasure hunters.
As in a pantomime I see a pauper walk by in tatters
And a heavenly escort carrying the royal robe and his sceptre.
Behind your agonised face tortured with fury
I see the joy and thrill of an accidental encounter.
The swift point of your bayonet going deep into my heart
Is but love's tremendous search for a kindred sentiment.
Faded buds discarded on muddy roadsides
Gather on Beauty's brow as a laurel of evergreen life.
Funny masks, those faces which barely hide the actors,
Still funnier the roles played by those comedians.
To go ahead, they march backwards,
To acquire love, they turn away from the Beloved,
To see and feel the joy of Oneness,
They walk blindfold and cut up their souls
Into unrecognisable twisted segments.
Adieu, black dreams, adieu sad and sombre dreams,
Come blue dreams, white dreams, come happy golden dreams.
Inheritors of Bliss, we can toy with pain and death,
Born out of Love, we must savor its poignant shades
Assured of our single Origin, we sever the roots from the Tree.
The real becomes an illusion with each new awakening,
Each grain of sand in a galaxy contains another star city.
The night conceals in her robes an ever-new unborn sun.
Each waking is a deeper dream,
A blue dream, a white dream and a golden dream.

Where was Man?

Where was Man

Where was Man
When God brought out the Suns from the womb of Nothingness,
Launched the illumined galaxies in the timeless currents of space
And laid out the flight-path of the cosmic destiny?
Where was Man
When the mountains were fashioned, the volcanoes quenched,
The oceans filled with water and hope
To form the nursery of living wonder?
Where was Man
When God toyed with the idea of forms
And gave to every shape and mould a span of life and a joy
And through infinite patience arrived at Homo-sapiens?
As a token of gratitude to the long labour of the Divine
Man disowns his Sculptor and calls Him an impostor.
A mere flicker in time, dead before he is born,
He feels he is the jewel – fulcrum of the Creation.
At every step he fights his Maker
Who is leading him on towards an incredible transmutation.
He opposes his colossal ignorance against God’s design,
And runs headlong towards his own ruin and downfall.
Yet the Divine tolerates man’s presumption.
This ephemeral creation is the rough-cut replica of the timeless One,
A crude image formed of seven metals and seven hues of Delight,
He is small and weak in body, but transcendent in spirit.
Man’s arrogance comes from a hidden Knowledge.
His amour-propre has its source in the Divine Self.
His blindness finds strength from a deep luminous well.
His self-assertion is backed by an inborn right of existence.
He challenges fate secretly supported by an Omnipotence.
He kills his fellowmen and does not recoil from death,
He throws away a life’s work in a whimsical moment
Sustained by the deathless Opulence of the bodiless Spirit.
Each child, youth or maiden, each human being, weak or strong,
Slave or master, happy or suffering, despot or kindly,
Is a mystic incarnation for an irretrievable instant.
We are no other than our Father, the Lord, our Mother, the One.
Rise Man, pull down the barricades of time,
Spread out in the vastness of the soul’s vision,
Rise, break out from the golden chrysalis of enchantment.
All is miraculously the Same, be His conscious Portion in time.

The Mysterious Mother

The Mysterious Mother

Blessed are the souls consecrated by Thy Grace.
This creation through the eternal time is only Thyself in progression.
Whose soul can claim Thee exclusively as its own
Yet there is nowhere a soul which is not Thy abode.
To contain the ocean in a wine glass,
To squeeze the Himalayas into a matchbox,
To erect a fence around Thy creative Fire,
To make Thy Beauty a captive in a golden prison,
Is a mad impossible game, men love to play.
O Mother Divine, open our eyes, break the bounds of our mind,
Shatter the blind passionate wall around our heart.
May we become conscious of Thy eternal presence,
Even in the void where the stars are absent.
May my soul adore Thee in a million bodies and forms
Constantly moving, changing, disappearing and renovating,
Marvellous procession of Thy numberless faces, gleams of Thy Light,
Fascinating, evanescent images fleeting across my hypnotised vision.
Who art Thou, O Mother of irresistible wonder, eternal, unique?
My soul with a dim candle is scrutinising the faces of sculpted divinities,
In an endless mountain gallery to identify Thee in a hopeless effort,
To shout victory, at last I have found Thee - This is She, This is She,
But to this day, no face has satisfied me, my hunger to meet Her
Burns like a slow delicious fire, yet when I do not seek Her
I feel Her strong arms closing around my soul, Her intolerable sweetness.
The fire burns all the more. I am engulfed by Her blissful Mystery.
She lures me on and I run, wherever I look I meet Her gaze.
The statues in the mountain gallery smile at me with Thy thousand eyes.

prayer and hope

Let us lay at Her feet with love, all our thoughts and emotions
Our life and actions from the vilest to the noblest
Our heart, mind, body and soul, all our substance.
Let Her light illumine the thousand dark alleys of life
Her felicity tune the discordant heart strings in conflict,
Her peace cool the warring uncontrollable bodily existence.
May we surrender without any bargain or the least regret,
Our unhappy, insecure, tormented life of gilded falsehood
To the Mother Divine waiting with Her boat to take us
To the other shore, the land of love, beauty and harmony.
